Our Spring assessment day was a great success and one person stood out to us as being a perfect fit for the Apricity team. That person is Jake, who has now been with us for over a month and is shining in his new role as Compliance Support. Let’s hear from Jake on how he’s finding life as part of The Grad Scheme…

So, Jake how did you find your first month at The Grad Scheme?

Everyone has been so welcoming, and I’ve never felt more comfortable in a job role before. Like the majority of the graduates here, I was completely new to the finance industry, but I was also new to working in an office as I previously worked at a power station, so a slight change there! With support from all my peers, I quickly found my feet and settled right in. This month has been a perfect balance between hard work and banter between colleagues, which definitely contributes to the positive atmosphere in the office. I’ve enjoyed working with my fellow grads who I started with and each day just keeps getting better.

Describe the first impressions you had on your first day…

On my first day in the office, I was quite apprehensive, but that quickly changed and I became more confident and relaxed as the day went on. I didn’t know what to expect when I arrived, but everyone in the office made me feel welcome and immediately part of the team. I felt happy to be in a place where people care about you and would help you at any time. The organisation of the training was flawless and with the constant support, I have never felt on my own during the process.

What was your favourite thing about the application process?

My favourite thing about the application process was that it encouraged me to be myself and show off my personality. This was a great thing for me because I’m a fun and outgoing person and The Grad Scheme look for people who fit their ethos of putting some fun into the finance industry. I liked how the questions were about me and there were no standard interview questions like ‘name one time you acted in a team to solve a problem?’ – instead, there were questions like ‘if you were a superhero, what would your name and superpower be?’.

What advice would you give to anyone who is thinking about applying for The Grad Scheme?

Don’t think too hard about your answers because that’s not what they are looking for. The application process is about you and not what you can do, so just apply and have fun. Everyone here is really helpful and the assessment day is a unique experience. Also, don’t take yourself too seriously because it might work against you, so just be yourself and enjoy the whole process.

Do you have any memorable moments so far?

I have got to say the pizza van for the company birthday was brilliant! We were also showered with gifts such as cupcakes, coffee mugs and a gratitude notebook – which just tells you how much they care for us as employees. We have the Summer Soirée soon, so I’m looking forward to that as well.
